莎士比亚的十四行诗第一至一百二十六首致一位青年，第一百二十七致一百五十二首致一位“黑肤女人”，最后两首与他们无关。其内容大致有三类；歌颂美、歌吟友谊，赞美爱情。从总的说是一个有机的整体。莎士比亚在第一百零五首里宣称； 真、善、美，就是我的全部的主题： 真、善、美，变化成不同的辞章， 我的创造力就用在这种变化里， 主体合一，产生瑰丽的景象。

真、善、美的统一，这便是莎士比亚十四行诗的总主题。第四十六首也不例外。

莎士比亚的十四行诗：

Shakespeare Sonnet 12

When I do count the clock that tells the time,

And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;

When I behold the violet past prime,

And sable curls all silver'd o'er with white:

When lofty trees I see barren of leaves,

Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,

And summer's green, all girded up in sheaves,

Born on the bier with white and bristly beard;

Then of thy beauty do I question make,

That thou among the wastes of time must go,

Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake,

And die as fast as they see others grow;

And nothing 'gainst Time's scythe can make defence

Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence.
